*nix

My long held comparison views on the commercial non-Intel Midrange UNIX OSes out there based on my own experiences & expectations, being as generalistic as possible:

AIX >> ( Linux/*BSD > Solaris > HP-UX )

Now the amount of each I've seen out there which has been or is being deployed:

Solaris >> ( Linux/*BSD > AIX > HP-UX )

(Where > is greater than and >> is much greater than).

Naturally combine Veritas software with any one of the above greatly puts the OS it self out of the bigger picture within Midrange. HP-UX seems to be going out of the door for a while now.

On the other hand SANs and Virtualisation seem to be in the spotlight these days more so that any OS out there. OS has largey become something that simply makes all the hardware work together to run the App/DB.

Now if I could only run AIX on something that's not a pSeries... Can run Solaris within VMware quite well, but AIX, no such luck even with AIX 6 Open Beta & PearPC...

(d'oh! lost previous comment I entered).

Anyways, I was saying that my experience is pretty much between Linux and Solaris, and like them both. Linux is pretty good mainly due to the fact that almost everything you need comes pre-packaged in a distro (for e.g building a LAMP stack) and I like Solaris for it's reliability and hardware integration.

With AIX and HP-UX being less common, it's also very hard to find people for those kinda environments.

As they say, horses for courses.

Though I'm less and less convinced about the importance of the OS. In most cases you can replace Linux with Solaris or some other UNIX (or maybe even Windows!) It's the whole package that counts, not just the OS by itself.

Linux is definately best suited for features and LAMP stack.

Solaris is the long term safer of the options to know, there's lots of it out there (it's not gona go anywhere any time soon).

Too bad AIX is not as prominent tho, it's technologically very well designed. You should get into it once Solaris becomes too repetitive ;)
